Planning Our Trip – Thailand with a Dubai Pit Stop

This will be the kiddies first trip to Asia and it’s a trip I have dreamed of talking them on since they were born.  So as soon as the opportunity arose, Alex and I began hatching a plan!

It’s a 4-week trip across December starting off with a 3 day layover in Dubai. We could easily blow our entire budget within these 3 days in the most extravagant city in the world, so we have researched and planned to see and do as many free/cheap things as possible! Obviously, top on our list is The Burj Khalifa and those incredible fountains but we can’t wait to explore the markets, get lost in the Miracle Garden and relax on the stunning beaches.

Flying over to Bangkok, it’s a brief one night stay here (Don’t worry, we are coming back!) First on the list here is, you guessed it, The Grand Palace.

Chiang Mai

Zipping off To Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai the following morning. If I am honest, this is the part of the trip that I am most excited about! Chiang Mai is a land of misty mountains and colourful hill tribes, a playground for seasoned travellers, a paradise for shoppers and a delight for adventurers. Our Chiang Mai itinerary is probably the most compact, with so much to see and do and just not enough time.

Elephant Sanctuary

Bubba* has spent hours researching to find the most ethical Elephant Sanctuary she could find and has settled on the Elephant Nature Park. These sanctuaries are a place of protection for these stunning animals who have been mistreated all across Thailand, but it is paramount you research in to any “Sanctuary” as unfortunately, some are not as ethical as we would expect!

Bua Tong Waterfalls

Located about an hour North of Chiang Mai, they are also known as the Sticky Waterfalls as you can actually walk up them. Due to the mineral deposits, the rocks are sticky, enabling you to explore a waterfall like never before. It looks like the perfect spot for relaxation and a in true British style, a picnic.

Markets

Chiang Mai boasts an exciting scene for shoppers, with an array of markets from night bazaars to fresh food markets. There is something for everyone and its always a great place to explore the culture.

Chiang Mai Grand Canyon

You’ve all heard of the Grand Canyon, but have you heard of the Grand Canyon of Chiang Mai?! No? Well hidden away in Northern Thailand is a stunning spot that’s all about the water sports. Cliff diving, sunbathing on bamboo rafts, zip lines, you can even ride a bike on the water.

Krabi

Moving down to the South, we are planning on basing ourselves on Ao Nang beach and exploring the local area and all those beautiful islands.

Island Hopping

I have an ever-growing list of islands I want to visit in this region. Starting with Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Hong, Bamboo Island, Koh Jum, and Koh Rok. This region has been on my bucket list for a while know, We cannot wait to relax, wander and snorkel our way from island to island.

Railay

Accesible, only by boat, the beach is famous for its crystal clear waters and rock climbing. The combination of limestone formations and the prettiest beaches in the region create a dramatic climax all backed by a jungle. It’s really looks like a piece of paradise.

Bangkok

Returning to Bangkok, ready for that dreaded flight home, we have allowed 4 days to truly explore this amazing city. I’m leaving this part of our trip rather open and unplanned, ready to see where the mood takes us.

Its easy for me to go over crazy on the planning, I’m sure I have said it before, but I do love a spreadsheet! I have planned this trip in a different way this time, instead of a schedule, I have just created a list of Must-See’s. I’m hoping the freedom gives us a sense of fluidity or it could just drive me in to panic mode! All the family created their own lists and I have combined them all for our perfect family adventure.

Let me know if there is anything you think we must see or do!
