The time we spend with our children is absolutely priceless but never underestimate the power of some adult time. A little week exploring the South of Italy has done wonders for us not only as a couple but also as parents.
We were lucky enough to stay in the most magical place in Puglia, Palombara Piccola. I cannot even begin to put in to words how enchanting the villa is with its infinity pool overlooking the whispering olive groves, stunningly created gardens and total luxury feel.
South Italy has so much to offer beyond the stunning beaches. The Italian culture oozes everywhere you turn. Ensconced in olive groves and grape vines the landscape is green and vibrant. More so than most of the Mediterranean I have seen.
We could of quite easily closed the doors on the world and stayed in our amazing villa for the entire week, but we managed to find the perfect balance between relaxation and exploration and I am so glad we did.
Olive Oil Tasting
Puglia supplies around 40% of Italy’s olive oil and its easy to see how. I don’t think you can look in any direction without seeing olive trees. We visited a local olive grove called Masseria Brancati, to learn more about the process and different types of oils. The olive grove itself is home to trees as old as 1000 years. The farm has preserved all the original features and is therefore a genuine historical interest. We had a guided tour which took us back in time to a time when slaves were used to press the olives. It also allowed us to taste the different types of oils they have to offer. This tour really felt like it helped us understand the soul of Puglia.
And we learned, Olive Trees aren’t actually trees! They are bushes! Who knew?!
Wine Tasting
We visited Masseria Croce Piccola and met with the passionate Pepe. We toured the grape vines as he showed off his amazing crop with devotion and excitement. Pepe was the most fabulous host and joined us in tasting his wine – It was so good, there were a few boxes of wine waiting for us when we returned home.
Le Palme Beach Club
Not going to waste much time writing about this place but I just wanted to warn you – It’s a waste of money. Bad service, Ridiculously over priced and to be honest the public beaches are so amazing there is just no need.
Ostuni – The White City
We visted Ostuni multiple times during our visit. The purity drew us back. As the name may give away, its a stunning cliff side unique town with white washed buildings, winding streets, exciting squares and genuinely charming character.

Don’t miss this off your list!
Alberobello
Alberobello is an extremely unique town, made up of cone shaped house called Trulli. In the words of Unesco, which declared Alberobello a World Heritage site in 1996 and its not hard to see why.
The story behind these buildings is really interesting. In the 1500’s, the local rulers within the feudal system, wanted to avoid paying property taxes to the King. They ordered local peasants to build their houses and dwellings without mortar so that, in the event of a royal inspection, the structures could quickly and easily be taken down, and the tax bill would remain low.
Alberobello is an absolute “must see” on your travel list, but be prepared to go early or late in the evening as it does get really busy with day trippers.
A week in a new location is never enough but 7 whole days is better than none. Puglia, we will be back – Maybe with the kids next time.
